Suggested 1-Day Itinerary
07:30 – Hotel pickup. Your driver meets you in the lobby (or at airport arrivals with a name sign). Leaving before 8:00 matters in Beijing — it beats the morning rush hour and gets you to the Wall before the tour buses.
09:00 – Mutianyu Great Wall. About 73 km from downtown, usually 1.5–2 hours’ drive. Your driver drops you at the visitor center, helps you get shuttle and cable car tickets, and waits while you explore. Plan 2.5–3 hours on the Wall. The cable car takes you up in minutes; energetic travelers can ride the famous toboggan down.
12:30 – Lunch near the Wall. Simple local restaurants near Mutianyu serve decent home-style dishes. Your driver knows which ones are honest — this is a no-commission route, we never route guests through “jade museums” or “tea ceremonies.”
14:00 – Drive back to central Beijing. Nap time in the car. With light traffic you’re back in the city around 15:30.
15:30 – Central Beijing highlights. Choose one based on energy and tickets:
- Forbidden City (if you booked ahead — see FAQ below, this one needs planning)
- Jingshan Park — the hilltop view over the Forbidden City’s golden roofs, no advance booking needed
- Hutong area around Shichahai — old Beijing lanes, lake views, rickshaws
- Temple of Heaven — usually easy to enter in the afternoon
18:00–18:30 – Drop-off at your hotel, a Peking duck restaurant (ask your driver for a non-tourist-trap one), or the airport if you’re flying out the same evening.
Why Mutianyu and Not Badaling?
Badaling is the section most Chinese tour groups visit — it receives over 10 million visitors a year. Mutianyu sees roughly 60–70% fewer visitors, has equally dramatic scenery, a cable car AND a toboggan, and is only slightly farther from the city. For foreign visitors it is almost always the better first Great Wall experience. If you specifically want Badaling (high-speed rail photo ops, or you’re combining it with another route), tell us and we’ll plan around its crowds.
Which Vehicle Should You Choose?
- 1–3 travelers, light luggage: a 5-seat sedan or SUV is comfortable and economical.
- 4–6 travelers, or 2–3 with big suitcases / a stroller / grandparents: take the 7–9 seat MPV — the extra space matters on a 3-hour round trip to the Wall.
- Child seats are available on request — tell us the age when you ask for a quote.

What’s Included / Not Included
Included in the car service fee: vehicle + driver for the day, fuel, highway tolls, parking, driver’s meal allowance.
Not included: attraction tickets (Great Wall entrance, cable car/toboggan, Forbidden City) and your meals. We’ll gladly help you figure out ticket options and book what can be booked — many guests find the ticket rules the most confusing part of Beijing, and that’s exactly what we’re here for.
Practical Tips & FAQ
Do I need to book the Forbidden City in advance?
Yes — and this catches many travelers out. Tickets are released 7 days ahead (8:00 pm Beijing time), sell out fast in peak season, require your passport details, and there are no gate sales. The Forbidden City is also closed on Mondays. If your only free day is a Monday or tickets are gone, the Jingshan Park viewpoint plus a hutong walk is a great plan B.
Does the driver speak English?
Our drivers handle basic English plus translation apps for the road; trip planning and all detailed communication happens with our team on WhatsApp in fluent English, before and during your trip. If you want deep historical explanations at the sights, ask us about adding an English-speaking guide.
Is the Great Wall doable with kids or older parents?
Mutianyu is the most senior/kid-friendly section: shuttle to the base, cable car up, well-restored walkways. Plan a slower pace and tell us — we’ll adjust pickup time so nobody is rushed.
Can this route start from the airport?
Yes. Land at PEK or PKX in the morning, do the Wall with your luggage safely in the car, and check in to your hotel in the evening. It’s the most efficient jet-lag day possible.
