Chengdu 1-Day Private Driver Route: Panda Base + Leshan Giant Buddha
Panda Base at feeding time, Leshan Giant Buddha and hotpot night.

The Chengdu classic: pandas at breakfast, a 71-meter Buddha after lunch, hotpot by night. One private car, one English-friendly driver, and a day that would take three separate tours to cover any other way.
This route works for families (pandas!), first-time visitors, and anyone using Chengdu as the gateway to Sichuan.

Suggested 1-Day Itinerary
07:30 – Hotel pickup. The early start matters more here than anywhere: pandas are most active at breakfast time and doze off as the day warms up.
08:00 – Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding. Arrive at opening. Two to two-and-a-half hours of pandas eating bamboo, cubs tumbling in the nursery area, and red pandas trotting past. Book tickets ahead — we handle that.
10:45 – Drive to Leshan. About two hours south. Nap time, or ask your driver about lunch options — simple Sichuan restaurants near Leshan do excellent tofu dishes.
13:30 – Leshan Giant Buddha. The world’s largest stone Buddha, 71 meters of Tang-dynasty ambition carved into a river cliff. See it up close via the cliff walkway, or from the river by boat — see below for which to choose.
16:00 – Drive back to Chengdu. Another two hours of rest.
18:00 – Evening, your pick: People’s Park teahouse (bamboo chairs, ear cleaners, locals playing mahjong), Jinli Ancient Street lanterns, or straight to a hotpot dinner — your driver knows which places do a genuinely mild broth for beginners.
Cliff Walk or Boat at Leshan?
The boat (about 30 minutes) gives you the full Buddha in one frame — the only way to really see how big he is — with zero stairs. The cliff walkway gets you close enough to stand beside his toes, but involves long stair queues in peak season. Families with seniors or small kids: take the boat. Photographers with good knees: walk. Doing both is possible on a quiet day.
Which Vehicle Should You Choose?
- 1–3 travelers, light luggage: a 5-seat sedan or SUV is comfortable and economical.
- 4–6 travelers, or 2–3 with big suitcases / a stroller / grandparents: take the 7–9 seat MPV — the extra space matters on the four hours of driving this day includes.
- Child seats are available on request.

What’s Included / Not Included
Included in the car service fee: vehicle + driver for the day, fuel, highway tolls, parking, driver’s meal allowance.
Not included: attraction tickets (Panda Base, Leshan entrance, boat) and meals. We’ll book the time-sensitive tickets for you — the Panda Base uses timed entry in peak season.
Practical Tips & FAQ
Why do we have to start so early?
Pandas eat in the morning and sleep through midday — a 8:00 arrival versus an 11:00 arrival is the difference between tumbling cubs and black-and-white pillows. Early also beats the tour-bus waves at both sights.
Is this doable with young kids or grandparents?
Yes — it’s mostly gentle walking, the Panda Base has shuttle carts, and the Leshan boat option removes all stairs. The two two-hour drives double as nap time.
Can we skip Leshan and do more of Chengdu instead?
Of course. Pandas + Sanxingdui Museum (bronze-age wonders), pandas + city classics (Wenshu Monastery, Kuanzhai Alleys, People’s Park) — tell us your interests and we’ll reshape the day.
How spicy is the food, honestly?
Sichuan heat is real but avoidable: every hotpot place offers a mild or split pot, and your driver will point you to restaurants used to foreign guests.
