Chongqing 1-Day Private Driver Route: City Highlights + Night Views
Ciqikou, the train through a building, Yangtze cableway and Hongya Cave at night.

Chongqing is China’s most cinematic city — and it saves its best act for after dark. One private car, one English-friendly driver, and a day scheduled backwards from the moment Hongya Cave lights up.
This route works for first-time visitors, photographers, families, and cruise passengers starting or ending a Yangtze cruise.

Suggested 1-Day Itinerary
10:00 – Hotel pickup. No dawn start here — Chongqing’s magic is nocturnal, so we begin relaxed and end glowing.
10:45 – Ciqikou Ancient Town. Stepped lanes, teahouses, chili shops and porcelain history on the Jialing River. Ninety minutes of wandering and snacking.
12:30 – Hotpot lunch. Chongqing invented it. Your driver knows the honest places — and will order you a mild or split pot unless you insist otherwise.
14:00 – Liziba: the train through the building. Watch the monorail dive through the middle of a residential tower — the shot that made Chongqing internet-famous. Ten minutes, endlessly rewatchable.
15:00 – Yangtze River Cableway. The old commuter cable car across the river, now the best cheap thrill in the city. We time it before the evening queues.
16:30 – Nanshan or Raffles viewpoint. See the whole “8D city” stacked on its mountains — bridges over bridges, roads on rooftops.
18:30 – Dinner near Jiefangbei, the downtown pedestrian heart.
19:30 – Hongya Cave after dark. The eleven-story golden stilt-house complex above the river — the view from Qiansimen Bridge is the single most photographed frame in Chongqing. This is what the whole day was building to.
Why We Schedule Chongqing Backwards
Most tours start at 8 am and are exhausted by sunset — exactly when Chongqing switches on. We plan from 19:30 backwards, so you arrive at Hongya Cave fresh, fed, and holding a camera. Bonus: the mountain city is all stairs and slopes, but with a private car you cheat the hills all day.
Have a second day? Pair this city route with our Chongqing to Wulong day trip — karst bridges and gorges three hours from downtown.
Which Vehicle Should You Choose?
- 1–3 travelers, light luggage: a 5-seat sedan or SUV is comfortable and economical.
- 4–6 travelers, or 2–3 with big suitcases / a stroller / grandparents: take the 7–9 seat MPV.
- Child seats are available on request.
More detail on our fleet is on the Chongqing car service page.
What’s Included / Not Included
Included in the car service fee: vehicle + driver for the day, fuel, tolls, parking, driver’s meal allowance.
Not included: attraction tickets (cableway, viewpoints) and meals. Tickets here are simple — most of Chongqing’s best sights are free to look at.
Practical Tips & FAQ
How much walking is involved?
Chongqing is vertical — stairs are unavoidable at Ciqikou and Hongya Cave. But the car takes you point-to-point, and every stop can be shortened. Tell us about knees and strollers; we’ll plan lifts and easier angles.
Is the food too spicy for us?
Chongqing hotpot is the spiciest in China at full strength — but split pots and mild broths are everywhere, and there’s excellent non-spicy food (roast fish, noodles, dumplings). Nobody goes hungry.
We’re starting/ending a Yangtze cruise. Does this work?
Perfectly — we pick up or drop off at the cruise terminal, keep your luggage in the car all day, and time the drop-off to boarding.
When is the best light for photos?
Blue hour — roughly 30 minutes after sunset — at Qiansimen Bridge. In summer that’s around 8 pm; we adjust the schedule by season so you hit it.
