Guizhou 1-Day Private Driver Route: Huangguoshu Waterfall from Guiyang

Asia’s biggest waterfall is a two-hour drive from Guiyang — and you can walk behind it. One private car, one English-friendly driver, and Guizhou’s signature sight done properly in a day, with an ancient-town bonus on the way home.

This route works for travelers basing in Guiyang, families, and anyone adding a nature day to a Guizhou food-and-culture trip.

  • Best for: nature lovers, families, photographers

Suggested 1-Day Itinerary

07:30 – Hotel pickup. Beating the tour buses to the falls is worth the alarm clock.

09:30 – Huangguoshu Scenic Area. About 130 km southwest of Guiyang. Start with the star: the Great Waterfall, 77.8 m of thunder — and the walkway through Water Curtain Cave, where you look at the river falling from behind it. Bring the raincoat; you’ll grin anyway.

12:30 – Lunch near the park — Anshun-style dishes; Guizhou’s sour-soup fish is the one to try.

13:30 – Tianxingqiao section. The quieter, stranger sibling: a stone forest growing out of turquoise water, root-wrapped bridges and bonsai landscapes. Many visitors like it even more than the big fall.

15:30 – Depart for Guiyang. Nap in the car.

16:30 – Qingyan Ancient Town (optional): a Ming-era garrison town of stone gates and city walls on the way back — an easy hour of lanes and snacks.

18:30 – Guiyang drop-off at your hotel or straight to a riverside dinner street.

When Is the Waterfall at Its Best?

June to October is the wet season: maximum thunder, maximum mist, rainbows in the spray on sunny afternoons. Winter runs thinner but comes with blue pools and few crowds. Either way the park uses timed tickets and internal shuttles between sections — logistics that are genuinely confusing on your own and completely painless with a local driver handling them.

Which Vehicle Should You Choose?

  • 1–3 travelers, light luggage: a 5-seat sedan or SUV is comfortable and economical.
  • 4–6 travelers, or 2–3 with big suitcases / a stroller / grandparents: take the 7–9 seat MPV.
  • Child seats are available on request.

What’s Included / Not Included

Included in the car service fee: vehicle + driver for the day, fuel, tolls, parking, driver’s meal allowance.

Not included: park entrance, internal shuttle/escalator tickets and meals. We book the timed-entry tickets for you — they matter in peak season.

Practical Tips & FAQ

How much walking is it? Can seniors manage?

More than you’d think — the park is big. But giant outdoor escalators, internal shuttles and cart options cover the hard parts, and we can plan a gentler loop that still includes the Great Waterfall front-on. Tell us about knees and strollers.

Will we get wet?

At Water Curtain Cave, yes — happily. Cheap ponchos are sold everywhere; sturdy non-slip shoes are the real must.

Can we visit a Miao village on this trip?

The famous Xijiang Thousand-Household Miao Village is in the opposite direction — it needs its own day or an overnight (our multi-day Guizhou route covers it). For a taste of old Guizhou today, Qingyan Ancient Town on the return leg is the smart fit.

Is one day enough for Huangguoshu?

For the two main sections, comfortably. Completists who want all three sections plus the Doupotang falls should consider staying overnight in Anshun — ask us.
