Shanghai 1-Day Private Driver Route: City Highlights + Water Town
Yu Garden, Zhujiajiao water town and the Bund lit up at night.

This route suits first-time visitors, cruise passengers with one day in port, business travelers with a free day, and families who want Shanghai’s highlights without figuring out taxis and metro transfers.

Suggested 1-Day Itinerary
09:00 – Hotel pickup. Shanghai’s highlights don’t need a dawn start — the magic here is in the evening, so we plan the day to end at the Bund after dark.
09:30 – Yu Garden & City God Temple bazaar. Classical Ming-dynasty gardens surrounded by a lively snack bazaar. Try the soup dumplings (xiaolongbao) where locals queue.
12:00 – Drive to Zhujiajiao water town. About an hour west. Nap in the car or watch the city turn to canals.
13:00 – Zhujiajiao. Stone bridges, narrow lanes, canal-side teahouses and a slow wooden-boat ride under the Fangsheng Bridge. Much closer to the city than the famous Zhouzhuang, which makes this combination possible in one day.
15:30 – Back toward the city. One more in-car rest.
16:30 – Former French Concession. A relaxed stroll under the plane trees around Wukang Road — old villas, coffee, and Shanghai’s most photogenic streets.
18:00 – The Bund at dusk. Watch the Pudong skyline light up across the river — the classic Shanghai moment. Optional: a Huangpu River night cruise, or dinner drop-off anywhere you like.
Zhujiajiao or Zhouzhuang?
Both are beautiful canal towns. Zhujiajiao is about 1 hour from central Shanghai, which is what makes a “city + water town” single day realistic. Zhouzhuang is grander but roughly 1.5 hours each way — better as its own relaxed outing. If your heart is set on Zhouzhuang, tell us and we’ll plan the day around it instead.
Which Vehicle Should You Choose?
- 1–3 travelers, light luggage: a 5-seat sedan or SUV is comfortable and economical.
- 4–6 travelers, or 2–3 with big suitcases / a stroller / grandparents: take the 7–9 seat MPV.
- Child seats are available on request — tell us the age when you ask for a quote.
More detail on our fleet is on the Shanghai car service page.
What’s Included / Not Included
Included in the car service fee: vehicle + driver for the day, fuel, highway tolls, parking, driver’s meal allowance.
Not included: attraction tickets (Yu Garden, water town boat, river cruise) and your meals. We’ll help you figure out what needs booking — most Shanghai sights are far easier on tickets than Beijing.
Practical Tips & FAQ
Do I need to book tickets in advance?
Shanghai is relaxed compared to Beijing: Yu Garden tickets are usually available same-day, the Bund and the water town lanes are free to walk, and boat rides are bought on the spot. Only the observation decks (Shanghai Tower) and some cruises benefit from advance booking — we’ll sort those if you want them.
Can this start from the airport or cruise port?
Yes. Land at PVG or SHA — or step off a cruise at Wusongkou — and do this route with your luggage safely in the car, checking in to your hotel in the evening.
Does the driver speak English?
Our drivers handle basic English plus translation apps; trip planning and all detailed communication happens with our team on WhatsApp in fluent English, before and during your trip. Want deeper history at each stop? Ask us about adding an English-speaking guide.
Is this pace OK for kids or older parents?
Yes — it alternates walking with in-car rests, and every stop can be shortened. Tell us your pace and we’ll adjust.
