This route works for first-time Xinjiang visitors, business travelers with a free day in Urumqi, and anyone warming up for a longer northern Xinjiang journey.

Suggested 1-Day Itinerary
08:30 – Hotel pickup. A civilized start — remember, Xinjiang’s sun runs about two hours behind Beijing clocks, so 08:30 here feels like 06:30.
10:30 – Heavenly Lake of Tianshan (Tianchi). About 110 km east of the city. A turquoise alpine lake at 1,900 m, cupped by spruce forests under the snow-crowned Bogda Peak — part of the UNESCO Tianshan listing. Park shuttle up, easy boardwalk loops, optional boat ride. Plan close to three hours here.
14:00 – Late lunch on the way back — hand-pulled laghman noodles or big-plate chicken, the local classics.
16:00 – Xinjiang Regional Museum (optional): home of the famous 3,800-year-old Tarim mummies and silk-road treasures. Or skip straight to rest at the hotel.
18:30 – International Grand Bazaar. Naan ovens, kebab smoke, dried-fruit mountains, instrument shops and the evening crowds — Xinjiang’s flavors in one square kilometer. Dinner here, then drop-off.
Xinjiang Runs on Its Own Rhythm
Three things first-timers should know. Distances are huge: this day trip is the “short” one — Kanas Lake and Turpan each deserve their own days (multi-day route coming; ask us meanwhile). Time feels shifted: official clocks show Beijing time, but the sun — and local meal times — run about two hours later; sunset in summer can be 10 pm. Checkpoints are routine: you’ll pass security checks at the highway and scenic areas. Carry your passport, expect a few minutes’ wait, and let your local driver handle the flow — it’s normal here and nothing to worry about.
Which Vehicle Should You Choose?
- 1–3 travelers, light luggage: a 5-seat sedan or SUV is comfortable and economical.
- 4–6 travelers, or 2–3 with big suitcases: take the 7–9 seat MPV.

Practical Tips & FAQ
Do we need our passports for a day trip?
Yes — carry them always in Xinjiang. Checkpoints and scenic-area entries ask for ID routinely. With a local driver who knows the drill, it’s quick.
What should we wear?
Layers. Urumqi can be hot in summer while the lake at 1,900 m stays cool and windy. Sunscreen is non-negotiable — the light here is fierce.
Is the food halal? What if we don’t eat lamb?
Most local food is halal by default. Beyond lamb there’s chicken, beef, noodles, rice pilaf and excellent vegetables — tell us preferences and the driver will steer.
Can we do Turpan in one day instead?
Possible — it’s about 2.5 hours each way to the flaming mountains, karez wells and grape valleys — but it makes a long, hot day. Doable for the determined; better as part of a multi-day loop.
