Yunnan 5-8 Day Private Driver Itinerary: Kunming, Dali, Lijiang & Shangri-La
Kunming, Dali, Lijiang and Shangri-La with flexible long-distance driving.

Snow mountains, lake towns, Tibetan monasteries and old-town nights — the classic Yunnan arc, without a single bus station. One private car and driver from Kunming to Shangri-La (or any slice of it), hotels that actually take foreign guests, and a pace set by you, not a flag-waving tour leader.
The core plan below is six days. The full arc with rest days runs eight; tighter versions start at five. Based in Lijiang with just one day? See our Lijiang 1-day route.
Route Summary
- Duration: 5–8 days, same car and driver throughout
- Start/End: Kunming, Dali or Lijiang — flying into Lijiang and working backwards also works
- Best for: scenery lovers, couples, photographers, unhurried families
- Vehicle: 7–9 seat MPV recommended — mountain drives are long, legroom is happiness
- Price: quoted by days and route — send us your dates for a quote
Core Itinerary (6 Days)
Day 1 — Kunming: arrival + Stone Forest
Airport pickup, then the Stone Forest‘s limestone labyrinth (90 minutes east). Evening stroll at Green Lake Park among the seagulls.
Day 2 — Kunming → Dali (4 hours)
Arrive for lunch, then Erhai Lake‘s shoreline road — the S-bend viewpoints everyone photographs — and Dali Old Town under the Cangshan range by evening.
Day 3 — Dali: Three Pagodas + lake life
Morning at the Three Pagodas (the postcard of Yunnan), afternoon in Xizhou‘s Bai-architecture lanes with a baba pancake in hand, sunset at Shuanglang on the far shore.
Day 4 — Dali → Lijiang (3 hours)
Arrive by lunch. Afternoon in Lijiang Old Town and Lion Hill’s rooftop panorama; evening canals and night market.
Day 5 — Jade Dragon Snow Mountain
The big cable car to the 4,506 m Glacier Park (we pre-book the quota tickets), Blue Moon Valley‘s turquoise terraces, and quiet Baisha village — the full day our 1-day page describes, dropped neatly into the arc.
Day 6 — Tiger Leaping Gorge → Shangri-La (or return)
North along the Jinsha River to Tiger Leaping Gorge‘s thundering middle rapids, then up onto the 3,300 m plateau: Songzanlin Monastery‘s golden roofs and Dukezong old town by night. Fly out of Shangri-La next morning, or loop back to Lijiang.
Optional Modules
- + Rest day in Dali or Lijiang: the single most common request in hindsight — build one in.
- + Shaxi ancient town: the sleepy tea-horse-road stop between Dali and Lijiang most tours skip.
- + Impression Lijiang show at the snow mountain’s base.
- − Skip Kunming: fly straight to Dali or Lijiang and start the arc there — saves a day.
Altitude & Season — Read This First
The route climbs gently — Kunming 1,900 m, Lijiang 2,400 m, Shangri-La 3,300 m — which is exactly why we run it in this order: your body acclimatizes as you go. Skip alcohol the first nights, walk slowly on arrival days, and tell us about heart/lung conditions or very young kids so we plan the snow-mountain day at the right level. Season: March–May for flowers, September–November for golden light and clear peaks; summer is lush with afternoon showers; winter is crisp, blue-skied and wonderfully empty.
What’s Included / Not Included
Included: vehicle + driver for all days, fuel, tolls, parking, driver’s meals and lodging.
Not included: your hotels (we recommend and can book foreigner-friendly ones in each town), attraction tickets and meals. We pre-book the quota-limited snow mountain cable car — the one that sells out.
Practical Tips & FAQ
Why a private car instead of trains or buses?
The magic of Yunnan is between the towns — lake shores, gorge roads, villages with no station. A car turns transfers into sightseeing and lets you stop wherever the view demands it.
Is this doable with kids or older parents?
Very — it’s mostly gentle walking, drives are 3–4 hours max with stops, and the altitude plan above keeps everyone comfortable.
Can we extend to Lugu Lake or Yuanyang’s rice terraces?
Yes — both are spectacular and both add real driving days. Tell us your total days and we’ll tell you honestly what fits.
